Family Code: St ISSEYjohn GWENNAPtremain

BIRTH:
ABT 1810 in CON. Cornwall Census 1841: 25, b. CON. [Note: census ages in 1841 can be rounded down by up to 4 yrs]. Aged 41 in citizenship application 10 Nov 1853, 35 (as George MARKAM) in 1850 US Census, and 48 in 1860 US Census in which he is described as born in England

CHRISTENED:
13Apr1810 in Gwennap CON.

DEATH:
George does not appear with his family in the 1870 Census of Linden. As he would then have been c.60, it is more likely that he was deceased rather than absent mining in a different state. In 1880 his wife is recorded as a widow.

EMIGRATION:
Arrived in USAImmigration Note: Probably before 1848

NATURALIZATION:
Applied for Naturalization on 10Nov1853 at Iowa Co., WI when he was aged 41Took oath on .

RESIDENCES:

Residence Notes:
St Agnes was in 1841 a major tin and copper mining area
A George MORCOM made a land claim on 1st November 1849 of 80 acres in Section NR:34, Township: 6N of Wisconsin. I have been told that this is near Dodgeville, Iowa Co. near the border with Linden Co.
The 1850 USA census was on 28th August, and George and his family were entry 717, pg91, Schedule 1 Free Inhabitants of 6th District of Linden Town. The 1860 USA Census of Linden, was on 25th July. The entry is on Page No 114, Entry No 585/578

OCCUPATIONS:
BEF 1841-AFT 1841: Copper Miner in Wheal Rose District, St Agnes.
BEF 1860-AFT 1860: Farmer in Linden.Occupation Note: In 1850 the census gave George's real estate as worth $400. By 1860, the value of his real estate was $1500, and his personal estate was $200.

GENERAL NOTE:
More evidence needed that the George bapt.in Gwennap, as the son of George MORCOM and Maria nee TREMAINE, is the same George as the one who married a Jane TREMAINE in St Merryn and emigrated to Wisconsin. He is the closest match for age, and there is the common TREMAINE link. Did he marry a relative of his mother? The 1850 and 1860 Censuses included a Schedule 4 - Production of Agriculture (25th & 26th July 1860). First figure below is for June 1st 1850.ACRES OF LAND20-30 improved and 60-50 unimproved.LIVE STOCK1-2 horses, assess and mules, 1-3 milch cows, working oxen, 1-7 other cattle, sheep, 4-8 swine. Value of live stock $80-$200.PRODUCTION150 bushels of oats, 10 bushels of barley and 5 tons of hay in 1850, 100 bushels of wheat in 1860, 30-50 bushels of Indian corn, 200-20 bushels of Irish potatoes, $10 worth of market garden produce, 220 lbs of butter, 17 tons of hay, and $65 worth of animals slaughteredIn 1850 the farm implements and machinery were worth $70

GENERAL NOTE:
Is he the George F MORCOM in the following press reports? He is the only known George F MORCOM of the right age and this might explain his absence from the censuses of the period. The Pall Mall Gazette (London, England), Saturday, January 6, 1883; Issue 5570. Lord John HAY, Second Sea Lord of the Admiralty was to take command of the Mediterannean Squadron on the flagship "Alexandra" based on Malta. "Lord John Hay has selected as his secretary Mr George F Morcom, now at Devonport, who for three years acted in a similar capacity to Vice-Admiral Sir Leopold McClintock, Commander in Chief of the North American and West Indian station". Jackson's Oxford Journal of Saturday 13 Jan 1883 added that George F MORCOM had only returned to England on Wednesday last. There was a George Freen MORCOM mentioned on page 519-520 in AUK (a quarterly magazine dated 1932) of The American Ornithology Union. He would have been 85 in 1932 so it could be an obituary perhaps."On July 2, 1896, two female hummingbirds were taken in Rams Canyon, in the Huachuca Mountains, Ariz., by H. G. Rising. These two specimens were sent to Mr. Ridgway, who described and named them (1898) as a new species, Morcom's hummingbird (Atthis morcomi), in honor of G. Frean Morcom. In his description he states that "the adult male of this species is unfortunately unknown." "In his "Birds of North and Middle America" (1911), Ridgway treats Morcom's hummingbird as a subspecies of Atthis heloisa, under the name Atthis heloisa morcomi, which he characterizes as "similar to A. h. heloisa, but smaller (except bill) adult female paler below, with bronzy spots on chin and throat much smaller, sides less extensively cinnamon-rufous, and under tail-coverts pure white."According to our 1931 Check-list, moreorni is not accorded even subspeciflc rank and is regarded as identical with A. A. keloisa, "
